Sea Day

Whytney now has 8 days to go - and I am sure that the excitement is building.  She is at sea today, traveling between Rome, Italy and Dubrovnik, Croatia.  Sea days are usually very tiring and sometimes frustrating for her.  I hope that she realizes that she only has three more sea days to go (including this one)!  I hope that will be a sense of comfort and relief for her???

On this sea day - if she has time - she may reflect on the many days that she has had at sea working hard.  Her thoughts may also go to her fast approaching return home!  The later is more than likely what she will be thinking about.

I hope that she is refreshed today by the fact that she will soon be back on American soil and Mom will feed her whatever she wants!

With only 8 days remaining, enjoy each one Whytney and make those last fun memories of your first (maybe last???) cruise contract!

August 29th and the countdown is here!

9...8...7...6...WELL just 9 today!  But, single digits to say the least!

Whytney is in Rome today and I am unsure if she will be able to get off of the ship???

If she does, maybe she will be able to savor a Roman meal.  The Roman's enjoy their food and a typical meal would include:  A soup, an entree, a dessert

Stracciatella - An egg-drop soup, stracciatella is the perfect light prelude to a traditional Italian meal. Beaten eggs are combined with Parmesan cheese, salt, pepper, nutmeg and semolina (a coarse part of wheat that has not yet been ground), and then added to a boiling broth to thicken and then serve.

Veal Saltimbocca - After being pounded thin, veal cutlets (called Scallopini), are flavored with sage and then covered with a slice of Prosciutto, which is dried cured ham. Topped with a white wine and butter sauce, it's delicious!
Tiramisu - One of the most recognized Italian desserts, this cake is made of lady fingers in the United States but the authentic Roman version uses biscuits instead. After being soaked in coffee, the biscuits are layered with mascarpone cheese, zabaglione (a custard made from egg yolks), Marsala and sugar. Sprinkled with cocoa or chocolate shavings, the dessert has a rich sweet taste, without being overpoweringly sugary. It's the perfect ending to your fabulous Roman meal!

August 28th and a Flea Market in Florence?

Today, Whytney is in Florence....and only 10 days left!  Tomorrow will be single digits.  So hard to believe.

In Florence, Whytney could enjoy Tuscan Cuisine, see beautiful countrysides or go to the Flea Market.  What, did I really say Flea Market?  Yep!  Not only in Kentucky can you bask in other people's junk; but in Italy as well have they discovered that one man's junk is another's treasure!

The local flea market is Mercato Delle "Pulci".  Quite a famous one to speak of, located in the Piazza dei Ciompi and is open daily from 9 a. m. to 7:30 p. m.  The best day to go is the last Sunday of each month.  On these dates, you can find the vendors have extended booths out to surrounding streets.  Kind of like a neighborhood Yard Sale.  The treasures range from furniture to art; to knick knacks to old dusty books.  What a wonderful way to experience the people and culture, by sifting through "junk"!

Other markets are evident throughout town ranging from goods such as foods, art, clothing, etc.  Open air markets are a popular way of life in Florence.

I hope that Whytney has had an opportunity to experience at least some of these markets.  It is so rare to have those here (other than Flea Markets).  Hopefully, in doing so she was able to have a true picture of the Florence culture first hand and meet some native Tuscans?

Until day 9...LUM&L

Nice is so nice!

Especially with only 11 days remaining for Whytney.  I am sure that she is so excited that it is hard for her to focus on where she is. She is in Nice, France today.  Last time in Nice, she took some great pictures that she put on fb.  If you have a chance visit her page to see them - AMAZING!!!

Today in Nice it is 77 degrees; a perfect temperature even though it is cloudy.  She might get a chance to visit
the Rue de France Pedestrian Zone.  This is a pedestrian zone and a hub of constant activity.  This is a great place to find souvenirs and many shops; gourmet, clothing, books, etc.  You would also find a multitude of street performers here to entertain you.  I hope if Whytney is able to visit the Rue, she can grab a cafe' au lait and a tasty crepe and enjoy the afternoon or evening...

Eleven days and I am more impatient than ever!  I hope that they will go quickly for me and Whytney.

Until 10 and then on to single digits...LUM&L

A new AND final cruise

Today is a GREAT day!  Today is the first day of the LAST cruise for Whytney in this contract.  This cruise signifies a beginning of the end.  The last group of guests that will be graced with my daughter's presence.  It makes me a little (not much) sad for the guests that will follow.  They will not have the opportunity to experience my beautiful and vivacious daughter or experience her skills with their hair or teeth!

I will once again be able to call her and see her (at least for a moment)!  The short 12 days remaining will be filled with goodbyes and celebrations of friendships made.  Feasts eaten with friends and drinks clanked in toasts to the NEW journey that Whytney will be embarking on.

Do they realize how much they will miss her?  Possibly?  Do I think that she will miss them?  Probably? I think that home is what she is currently longing to see now, she probably will not think about friends left behind at first.

I hope that she will enjoy this, her last cruise.  She will be visiting Nice, France; Florence, Italy; Rome, Italy; Dubrovnik, Croatia; Venice, Italy (an overnight); Split, Croatia; and Naples, Italy.  What a way to finish!  I hope that she has an amazing LAST cruise.  Enjoy and make great memories....home will soon be a reality!

4 more Sea Days and 13 Days to Home!

Whytney is at sea today, traveling from Naples, Italy headed for Barcelona.  Her next to last cruise is coming to an end.  She will be porting in Barcelona, Spain tomorrow and embarking on her last cruise in this contract.  I am so excited about her upcoming trip home - I wish I could meet her at the airport in Dublin, Ireland!  This is one of the places that I have on my list to visit in my lifetime.  Since Whytney is at sea today - let's explore Dublin!

Whytney will be flying in to Dublin Airport on September 8th and arrive at 12:00 in the morning.  She will probably be staying overnight in a hotel close to the hotel.  She has a twelve hour layover here - not much fun to stay in the airport for that long.  This is what she will see flying in to Dublin:

She should be prepared for some "chilly" weather.  Dublin's current temperature is in the mid to upper 50's.  Another reason why I would LOVE to be there!  I hope that Whytney is prepared for this change in weather.  She might welcome a brief change from heat?!

I wish that Whytney was able to stay longer in Dublin to see some beautiful attractions, such as the Botanical Gardens.  This picture is what "my image" of Ireland is (only my image would include REAL sheep):

The birds eye view below shows an amazing landscape that I am longing to view in person.  Can you imagine living on this water's edge?  Do these people realize how lucky they are?  I hope so...

Yet, another castle that I will not see - I hope Whytney is able to catch a glimpse of this Irish Castle; the Malahide Castle:

If nothing else, maybe she can enjoy a true Irish breakfast before boarding her plane for the USA.  That would consist of eggs, sausages and the works - something like this:

Don't worry Whytney - I will have some "stick to your ribs" gravy and biscuits for you when you get home!

Until then....LUM&L

Naples Italy

With 14 days remaining and 2 more days in this cruise, Whytney is in Naples today.  Naples has been a warm 86 degrees today, much like Kentucky.  Finally cooling down a little bit for us around here!

Lots of beautiful architecture in the central part of Naples.

One such building is the Umberto Gallery that features a glass roof!

There are some castles that Whytney would be able to see in Naples:
The New Castle (Castel Nuovo)
Ovo Castle (Castel dell Ovo)

This is a Renaissance Gate attached to the Capuana Castle

Hopefully, Whytney was able to steal away to a castle and find a prince!

If not, she will have another sea day tomorrow on her way back to port in Barcelona on Thursday!  Then she will pick up her LAST cruise!!!

LUM&L

August 23 and 15 days - enough said!

A sea day - only 5 more sea days!  These are the days that are so difficult!  Lots of work!

I have not spoken to Whytney for several days and I know that she is probably very busy today.  Tomorrow she will be in Naples, Italy.  Today she is sailing between Greece and Italy on the Mediterranean Sea.

I will share with her that I took the day off today and went to the eye doctor.  It was very nice to be in Lexington on a gorgeous day.  I was thinking the entire day that it would have been nice if she had been with me to shop and eat lunch out and just spend some time together.  Not rushed by the thought that I had to leave her again soon or that she would be away from home for so long.  These last few days, 15 to be exact, are now slowing down.  Seeming to go backwards!

As she sails between two of the most beautiful places on Earth, I hope that she reflects on her recent journey.  I hope that she has enjoyed most of it, even with its challenges.  I hope that she has the memories of these places with her to help her face future challenges.  I hope, finally, that coming home will not be a disappointment to her after the amazing adventures that she has had!  I think that we will be able to keep her busy for a little while?

Until Naples....LUM&L

Whytney is at work in Athens

16 more days until I see Whytney.  Still on her journey, she ports in Athens, Greece today.  It is a work day for Whytney today and doubtful if she will be able to get off of the ship.

Here at home, the plans are being made for her arrival.  Nine months have passed. It seems like so long, yet the time has gone so fast.  I know that sounds odd - I guess that we get busy with the day to day and time passes.  I know that it probably seems like an eternity for Whytney; I think she has had some great adventures in that time.

Whytney's bedroom is all set up in the basement with her furniture.  The bed is the only thing that is yet to be set up.  Next weekend that will be on the agenda.  Her bathroom is all cleaned out - ready for all of her cosmetics and hair gear.  A shower that, I am sure, is at least four times the size of the one she has been subjected to for nine months.  She might even get lost in it.  Her walk in closet is empty and ready for all of her clothes (some of which she has not seen for a long time).  It will probably take her weeks to go through the boxes in the basement filled with her stuff.  It will seem like Christmas!

Back to Greece; Athens to be exact.  Even though Whytney will probably not be going out in town - I do want to share some interesting information that I found.  Because I just had a sloppy American slaw burger - I guess that I have hamburger on the brain.  Athens has their own version - the Souvlaki.  Originally popular with the Greeks, then the Western hamburger took over.  When a past recession hit, the hamburger took a nose dive and the Souvlaki was back in business. Now, Greece is the only country where McDonald's actually LOSES $$$!  Go figure, take that Big Mac!

This Greek "hamburger" consists of "meat" (pork, lamb, etc.) and cooked on a rotisserie type grill.  When done, it is put in a round pita bread and topped with lettuce, tomato, onions and sadziki.  Sadziki is a cucumber yogurt garlic sauce that finishes the souvlaki off!  Yum! Sounds tasty!

Maybe Whytney will be able to run off the ship and grab one of these.  It is fast food!

16 days and counting down each one...

August 21, 2010 in Turkey

Whytney finally gets a day off in Turkey.  I must say the Whytney took one of my recent posts a little too seriously.  I mentioned the she was "my wings"; I did not expect her to take this so literally.  She decided to go skydiving!  I am assuming that all went well.  I have had no news from her to say otherwise.  I hope that she enjoyed it and I am quite surprised that she jumped out of a perfectly good plane.  I thought I was the only one in our family that wanted to skydive.  I suppose that she thought since I couldn't, she would for me.  Thanks Whyt.

I guess Whytney will be doing a tandem skydive?  If she does, it is about a 35 - 40 second fall accompanied by a professional skydiver.  She would dive from about 10,000 feet.  What a way to see Turkey!

Ephesus is known as one of the great outdoor museums in Turkey.  I  am sure that Whytney was able to see some amazing sights from the sky!  I hope to get details soon and I will share!

17 days to go - they are flying by so quickly!  Not quick enough!

Impatience is the word of the day!

Whytney is in Mykonos, Greece today and only 18 days left in the Mediterranean.  I know in the past, Mykonos has been a favorite place of hers.  I hope that she is able to go off of the ship and visit Mykonos once again.

Whytney probably enjoys it so much for its diversity.  This island attracts all kinds of people.  Artists love the island for its beautiful landscapes and unique architecture; the younger travelers love the exciting nightlife; you can find something for anyone here.

Shopping is popular in Mykonos, in a particular area called Hora.  There are many stores that offer funky fashions for the fashion forward traveler.  You will find names such as Diesel, Dolce and Gabbana, Lacoste, and the list goes on.  You can still find the regular "tourist" items as well; some that are reminiscent of ancient Greece.

Whether Whytney decides to shop, lay on the beach, or just get a nice Greek meal, she will enjoy the relaxing feeling of this amazing island.  I do hope that she is able to visit today, it will be her last opportunity during this contract.  Her ship will not port in Mykonos again with her on it!

18 days to go and we are counting down each one with anticipation!

Nineteen is the number of the day

The date for Whytney to come home is fast approaching.  19 days to be exact.  I am excited beyond words and nervous in the same breath.

As most Moms, I am very much like those all over the world.  We always want what is best for our children.  We pray that they will grow up safe, have amazing opportunities, and be successful beyond our (and their) wildest dreams and imagination.  We never want them to suffer hardships or disappointments.  A true "rose colored" world us Mom's would love to paint for our children.

I am so guilty of all of this and more.  Whytney has always exceeded my expectations and amazes me with her tenacity and ability to overcome and face difficult obstacles head - on!  For most people her age, they would give up and maybe never reach their full potential - maybe not even come close.  Whytney is so different.  She has had to overcome so many obstacles and life circumstances in her short 24 years.  Some of which, I believe, I would have just thrown in the towel and given up.

Not only to overcome obstacles, but for Whytney to have accomplished her most recent goal, is nothing short of miraculous.  A nine month contract on a ship.  A small cabin shared by two FEMALES with NO window.  A work schedule that would cripple most burly men.  A ship full of guests that are not always kind.  And last and certainly LEAST - a very meager earning, barely worthy of even mentioning.  WOW.....I would not have been up to this challenge.

Words cannot express how proud I am of my daughter and the success that she has worked so hard for.  I hope for her that this experience is only the first in a long list of opportunities that she chooses to make for herself.  Yes - I said "make for herself".  So many of us WAIT for those opportunities to just drop in our laps.  How often does that happen?  Whytney is the type of person that will search out and find those and take a chance.

This has, apologetically, been the sappiest blog to date.  However, I want my daughter to know that the end of this contract does not and should not represent the END, but a BEGINNING.  A beginning of a new adventure, one where there are many possibilities - one with new opportunities - and, hopefully, one with a little more cash earnings!  It can't hurt!

19 more days until a Mom can wrap her arms around a Daughter!  And then, hopefully, time will stand still for a moment!

My mother wanted me to be her wings, to fly as she never quite had the courage to do. I love her for that. I love the fact that she wanted to give birth to her own wings.

Sicily is FAMOUS

Whytney is in Sicily today and only has 20 days to go - less than three weeks!  I really hope that she is able to go to Sicily today and experience the Sicilian culture and landscape.  In searching for information about Sicily, I found that it has 10 things that it is famous for and I wanted to share those.  I was able to locate this information at www.investsicily.com - great website - check it out!

1. Sicilian Red Wines – Some of the best red wines in the world come from Sicily and what makes many Sicilian wines so great is that some of them are grown on the Etna. The Etna with its volcanic soil on the hills of the Etna, means that the land is far more fertile and this enables the wines to have that extra special bite.

2. Mafia - Films such as the Godfather make many people worldwide fascinated by the mafia. Sicilians for the most part, do not hold the same affection for the mafia and often do not understand the adultation of them. If you are interested in the mafia though, there are some tours you can do in cities such as Palermo on the West coast.

3. Arancini - is a real Sicilian food and one which is perfect as a snack style food. It is not the healthiest of foods but you have to eat to enjoy sometimes. Arancini is fried and it is basically a ball of rice with pieces of meet in it.
4. Etna - has to be one of most well known things about places in Sicily and this is a treasure that Sicilians are very proud of. The Etna offers skiing in the winter and it there are also some beautiful villages located on the hills of the Etna.
5. Capers - If you go onto onto one or two of the Aeolian Islands, particularly on Salina island, you can pick capers. Capers are a type of flower which grow on the side of rocks and which taste perfect with food, including with many pasta dishes. The best way to preserve the capers in salt, to keep the flavour.
6. Taormina - has to be one of the coolest and classiest villages in the whole of Italy. The annual film festival attracts stars from worldwide and how many beaches do you know of that you can get a cable car down to from the main village. Taormina is a truly scenic and lovely village on the Eastern coast of Sicily.
7. Sicilian Ice cream - which is also known as gelato is very good in Sicily, with some interesting flavours including my favourite, jasmine (gelsomino). Another icy alternative and very popular in Sicily is granita. Granita is a flavoured ice crush.
8. Cannoli - is yet another Sicilian food and one which is much loved in Sicily, Italy. This pastry like food, filled with a a sugary type filling and a sheep's milk cream called ricotta, is a popular dessert in the bars of Catania, Palermo and across Sicily.
9. Island Living - Sicily is the biggest Mediterranean island and it is very much an island style of living. Many Sicilians see themselves as independent of mainland Italy, although when the Italian national team are playing, Sicilians are as Italian as anyone.
10. Agrigento is known in many countries and is famous for its greek temples.

Whytney would probably enjoy several of these top tens!  I hope that she has had an amazing day in Sicily and is as excited as we are about her fast approaching return home.....tomorrow she will be at sea and as always will face a challenging a busy day.  Are prayers remain with you.

Rome again...

21 days to go in a nine month contract and the excitement builds as we approach the single digits!  I can see the light at the end of the tunnel - I hope that Whytney can as well.

Whytney is in Rome, Italy today and come to find out; several famous people are from Rome.  Some that I found to be quite interesting include:

Julius Caesar (July 12, 100 BC - March 15, 44 BC).  Caesar was a Roman military and political leader.  He was ultimately assassinated on the Ides of March.

The Emperor Augustus  (born with the name Gaius Octavius) . He took the name Gaius Julius Caesar Octavianus (Octavian) in 44 B.C. after the murder of his great uncle, Julius Caesar. Caesar adopted Octavian in his will and made him his heir.

Augustus actually became a great leader by restoring peace to Rome after 100 years of civil war.  He managed an honest government and created a secure currency system.  He constructed a highway system with many bridges, aqueducts, and built numerous museums.

Finally the great actress Sophia Loren, born in Rome in 1934.  She starred in many famous movies co-starring with greats such as Cary Grant and Frank Sinatra.  She also was a singer and recorded many albums.

Even though Whytney will not be seeing these three walking the streets of Rome, she may see some of their past endeavours while there.  Who knows, she may even run in to some future greats from Rome?

I hope that she has a splendid day in Rome and looks forward to her adventures in Sicily tomorrow.

A day to catch up!

A day for me to catch up with the blog and for Whytney, she is spending day 22 in Florence, Italy.  This is supposed to be a good cruise for her and I do hope that she is finding that that is actually the case.  I should be talking to her later on this afternoon.  I will update you as soon as I know.  One thing that I do know, is that this is one of the last in two cruises remaining in her contract.  I have seen on FB that some are referring to her as the "granny" of the ship because she has been there so long!  I am so proud of her for sticking it out when I know that the easy thing for her to do was to come home!  Way to go Whytney!!!

Today, Whytney will enjoy a comfortable eighty degree temperature in Florence.  I would love to have 80 - still stuck with low nineties!

I have told you so much already about Florence, since she has been her often.  I will focus on some food specialties of the area.  That is my greatest interest when I travel anyway.  Hopefully, Whytney has been able to enjoy some of these delicious treats!

I have found the following examples of Florence cuisine specialties from the website, http://www.dininginflorence.com/ - a great site to find local restaurants and descriptions of some of the local fare.

Acqua Cotta

The actual name of this hearty vegetable soup cooked with bread is "cooked water." It is sometimes served with cheese on top and/or an egg.

Bistecca alla Fiorentina
A thick t-bone steak grilled and served with oil and salt that is usually made for two people, and is served rare.

Crostini
Toasted bread slices served with a chicken liver pùté or chopped tomatoes, basil, and olive oil.

Inzimino
Inzimino is stewed squid with spinach or black cabbage.

Panzanella
The original recipe consists of day-old Tuscan bread (unsalted) soaked in water and torn in pieces, raw pieces of tomatoes, red onion and basil. The salad is dressed with oil, vinegar, and salt.

Pappa al pomodoro
This Tuscan Tomato and Bread Soup is made with day-old Tuscan bread (unsalted), tomatoes, garlic, basil, broth, extravirgin olive oil, salt, and pepper.

Peposo
A dish typical from Impruneta made of beef stewed in Chianti, pepper, garlic, sage and rosemary.

Ribollita
Ribollita is a vegetable soup with cavolo nero (black leaf kale) and cannelini (Tuscan white beans). Its name means "re-cooked" in Italian.

Schiacciata alla fiorentina
Sponge cake made with orange rind, and served with whipped cream in the middle.

Torta della Nonna (Grandma's Cake)
A cream-filled tart with pine nuts on top.

Obviously, when in Italy, DON'T forget the gelato!

Until later.....LUM&L

August 15th at Monte Carlo!

Whytney will be in Monte Carlo (Cannes), France today on day 23.  Wouldn't it have been wonderful if she could have been there during the world famous film festival?

The festival is held each year in the spring.  This is when actors and actresses from all over the world converge on Cannes to see their favorite stars!

This is the best place to "star" watch.  Famous people from all over the world visit Cannes.  Typically arriving here in private jets or in their yachts.  A popular place for them to stay is the Boulevard de la Croisette or the Carlton Hotel pictured to the left.  This is where Grace Kelly first met Prince Rainier III, whom she later married.

Some of these luxurious hotels have exquisite French cuisine served on patios overlooking the Mediterranean Sea.  What a way to enjoy an expresso!

I could not, of course, leave out the demand for fashion in Cannes.  I am positive that, if given the opportunity, Whytney would certainly be taking in some "window" shopping!

I hope that Whytney was able to enjoy this one of a kind place today.  This is the only time that her ship will port here to my knowledge.  I will continue to count down the remaining 23 days and keep you updated on her journey toward home.

For us back in KY; another day, another redneck wedding.  A balmy 97 degrees makes for sticky, humid, hot messes....I am sure that Whytney will understand that.  I guess that I will let the pictures talk for themself:

Find Your Way Home in 25 Days

In the words of a NOW famous Kevin Skinner (ex-chicken farmer from Calloway County Kentucky); we hope that Whytney will soon "find her way back home".  These lyrics to one of Mr. Skinner's most recent releases is so appropriate to her situation and how we (her family) feels!

Here is a link if you would like to here the song that he sings to his daughter:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zf0v3G5bLLQ

It's been day's since you been gone
The clock on the wall turns awful slow

Having you here seems to light up this place
I want you here with me, but they don't feel the same,
Hey don't you know, Hey don't you know
You'll find your way back home

You're too young to understand why
You've always had to tell your Daddy goodbye
You'll never have to reach out your arms to me
Right here in my heart is where you'll always be
Hey don't you know, Hey don't you know
You'll Find your way back home
Find your way back home

They've tried to take a lot of good years from me
But in the end I know that they all will see
It don't matter how far, how far you've grown
They can't change what we carved in stone
Hey don't you know, Hey don't you know
You'll find your way back home
Find your way back home

C'mon and, find your way
Find your way
Find your way back home
Find your way back home

It's been days since you been gone

As Whytney finishes out today at sea, I hope that it has been a great day and that she is excited about her upcoming trip home.  We love you Whytney!

The details are done!

26 days from the return trip home and all of that has been finalized today.  Whytney will be returning home from Barcelona on September 7th.  She will fly into Dublin, Ireland for a 12 hour layover (I am so envious).  From Dublin, on to Chicago, IL and finally arriving in Louisville, KY at 9:35 p. m. on September 8th.  I am so excited I can barely stand it!  I do not think that Whytney has received my message about these details yet (because I have heard nothing from her); I am sure that she will be as excited as me!

Until then, on with the day to day to keep us occupied until she returns...Naples, Italy today.  A beautiful and mild 81 degrees and clear, sunny skies on this Thursday.

Whytney may not be able to get off in Naples, but, if she does, she will be going through the Naples Cruise port pictured here.

She may be able to visit Salerno (close to Naples) and walk on the Seaside Promenade.

It would be amazing if she could visit the Arechi Castle, towering 300 meters above Salerno.  This castle looms over the city and is host to numerous conferences and exhibitions.

If Whytney was able to visit this spectacular castle, she would be able to have a full view of the city of Salerno, the Gulf of Salerno and the Amalfi Coast.

Whether or not Whytney is able to visit Naples or close by city Salerno, I hope that this is a memorable day on her journey.  With only 26 days to go, it is difficult to imagine where she will go from here?  What kind of experience could top this amazing journey.  I hope that the memories that she has made will keep her motivated to continue to pursue her dreams.  Anything is possible....

Sea day and 27 more days in the Mediterranean

Whytney has probably had a challenging day today being a sea day.  Very busy and always lots of work, Whytney's least favorite days are at sea.  The ship is headed for Naples and she is a day closer to coming home.  I am sure, if nothing else, she is happy about that.

On this sea day - I am NOT going to focus on where Whytney is, but where she is going - HOME!  I want to give her a little motivation for making it those last 27 days - so here goes...

Hope you enjoy these familiar sights.  Remember, we will be waiting for you in 27 days!

August 10, 2010

28 days to go and the first day of school - for me and Kendall, that is!  I am so excited that we are now in the twenties and less than a month away from Whytney's return to the USA!  Today, she is in Split, Croatia and will probably be staying on the ship since she was just recently off in Venice.

Splicani are what the locals are called in Split.  They are very "sports oriented".  Soccer is their sport of choice.  The Splicanians are also known for their loves of nature, singing and good food and drink.

A couple of NBA players actually call Split their hometown; from the Boston Celtics, Dino Radja and from the Chicago Bulls, Toni Kukoc.

When in Split, you may encounter a unique game called picign.  This is commonly played on Bacvice Beach.  It requires a small  ball, usually five players and the shallow water of the sea (I suppose any shallow water would do - if the sea is unavailable).  The object is to keep the ball in the air for as long as you can.  You pass to other players and you can use any part of your body to accomplish this. The game is not to see who can win or lose, but to see who can relax and have the most fun possible!

Hopefully, even from the ships deck, Whytney will be able to see the beautiful countryside and beach that Split has to offer.

Less than one month...

Today, Whytney was in Venice again and had a great time!  29 days to go and I am attempting to finalize the details of her return trip back to Kentucky!

I am unsure of what she did in Venice today, but I am glad to hear that she had a great time. One thing I do know is that she really enjoys Venice.  Whether it is the attractions, the weather, or maybe the people; Whytney always has a great time in Venice.  It could be that there is a diverse population here.  Numerous tourists during this time of the year visit Venice, students from the University of Venice, and various transplanted residents.  The diverse culture is always energetic and ever changing.

This map gives perspective to where Whytney is and where she regularly goes on her cruises.  She has visited Venice, Rome, Naples, Salerno, Sicily, and she will be visiting Monaco I believe on the next cruise. I have always wanted to visit Italy; what an opportunity to be able to see these sights multiple times.  Lucky girl!

Unfortunately, I will cut the blog short this evening; school starts tomorrow and my bedtime calls!  Tomorrow brings Split, Croatia and one more day off of the nine month contract!  I hope it brings another adventure for Whytney.

Another day off in Venice

Overnight in Venice, Italy today with 30 days to go.  I think that Whytney was going to be able to go out in Venice tonight - I hope that she gets a great meal and enjoys the nightlife in Venice.

She would have no problem finding numerous pubs, clubs, or discos in Venice.  I wonder if she has ever been to a disco?  I wonder if we still have discos here in the states?  That so reminds me of the "John Travolta" days!

Most Venice natives take early evening strolls along the Riva degli Schiavioni.  Those visitors to Venice might want to visit some places around St. Mark's Square.  Here the "late" night tourist can find some nightlife.  Also there are more bohemian type areas in the backstreets of Cannaregio and San Polo; but most places will close around midnight or 1 a. m. You may luck out and find a few open later.

It is easier to find nightclubs in the summer when the tourist population is booming, however, they are not the easiest to find.  Harry's Bar is a must to visit.  This is the home of the Bellini; a must have when you are in Venice.  I had a Bellini one time at Johnny Carino's (in Frankfort, KY) but I am sure that there was a lot lost in translation - hope Whytney has one of those for me!

If she wanted a pub, The Fiddler's Elbow would be a good place to try - if she is pining for a more "English" atmosphere.  Otherwise, she could visit Bar Al Volto or Do Mori, a couple of Venetian bars that are favorites with the locals.

Whytney could dance at the Aida, a well known disco or at Casanova Music Cafe (the only club in Venice that is open until 4 a. m.).  Or she could find live music at Bacaro Jazz or the Paradiso Perduto.

I know that it is quite expensive, but I wish she would be able to take a gondola ride and relax while sailing through the streets of Venice.

Tomorrow Whytney will be in Venice again - another overnight!  and we will be in the TWENTIES!!!

Until then....LUM&L

ONE MONTH!

I was so lucky to talk to Whytney two times today!  I got an early morning wake up call first around 6 a. m.  It was so nice to hear her voice, even that early on a Saturday morning.  She sounded very good and talked about how much she was looking forward to coming home.  She called again around 3:30 this afternoon, before her bedtime (9:30 p. m. her time).  She was telling me about some of her friends that she has made over the last 8 months and how they would be getting off to go home over the next 3 cruises.  The Celebrity Century will never be the same once Whytney has left - they have no idea that their sparkle and shine will be gone!  I hope they enjoy it over the next 2 1/2 cruises....

Whytney is in Dubrovnik, Croatia today with 31 days to go.  She is not going to be able to get off of the ship today, :-( So sad, I would love for her to visit here and get some pictures; it is such a beautiful place in the online pictures that I have found.

Whytney's ship is sailing in the Adriatic Sea in the Mediterranean and port regularly in Croatia. I did not realize how close, geographically, it was to Hungary.  Whytney might remember our first exchange student, Andrea, from Hungary.  Unfortunately we lost contact with her a few years ago.

Dubrovnik is often referred to as the "Pearl of the Adriatic".  Whytney will be staying on the ship so I thought that I would share some pictures of the Port of Dubrovnik, which is what see will be seeing.

This could be her ship???  The Celebrity Century ported in Dubrovnik.

It is possible that she could see many yachts when ported in Dubrovnik - and a gorgeous coastline!

She could possibly see some beautiful beaches - hopefully not, she would probably be depressed that she can not be sun bathing!  Whatever she sees from the ships deck promises to be beautiful in this port.  And she is especially excited today with only one month to go on her contract.

Ticket out of Barcelona!

Not yet, but, in 32 days!  Today is a sea day for Whytney.  These are not her favorite so hopefully it will go quickly and smoothly for her today.

The Mediterranean Sea is to be sailed today; going from Rome to Dubrovnik, Croatia.  Hopefully, Whytney will be able to get off the ship in Croatia this time.  This is one place that she has not yet had a chance to visit.
Wouldn't it be nice to cruise the Mediterranean?  To be able to view different places rich in culture and history.  Seeing for yourself some of Europe's most stunning cities and their diverse art and architecture.  Not to even mention the food!  Visiting ports in Spain, France, Italy, Croatia, Greece, and Turkey is a dream come true for many of us who have rarely or never been out of the states.  To experience the magic of the Med and its beauty could bring memories to last a lifetime.

Whytney's ship, the Celebrity Century actually travels the Western and Eastern Mediterranean.  When in the West, they travel ports in Spain, France and Italy; when in the East, they travel ports in Italy, Greece and Turkey.

Most Mediterranean cruises sail between May and October.  The weather in the Med is very pleasant during the summer, however, it can get very hot in some locations.  May and June tend to be the favorite time of the year to travel the Med for most in order to have the best weather.  Regardless of the time of year, the Mediterranean is beautiful any time of the year.

If you decide to travel with Whytney on the Celebrity Century, you would probably want to stay in a suite if you go on a Mediterranean cruise.  Since most cruises in the Med are an average of 12 or more days, you certainly want to be comfortable in your accommodations.  Try the Royal Suite which offers numerous luxuries and plenty of space.  The floor plan looks similar to this:

This suite is located on the Penthouse level of the ship.  I loved being on this level when I cruised with Whytney.  It was just below the spa and so close to Whytney!

I wish that I could go on a Mediterranean cruise with Whytney. I will not have to wait long to see Whytney; only 32 days to go.  In 32 days, she will be leaving Barcelona and heading for home!  I cannot wait and I know that Whytney can't!  I think that she would jump ship if she thought she could swim home!  Let's hope that she will wait!

Let's hope that she will be able to get off in Dubrovnik, Croatia tomorrow for her day off????  Post some pictures for us if you can Whytney - we really enjoyed the last ones in Nice.

Until 32 days pass, remember....Mommy....LUM&L

33 days when in Rome!

Whytney is in Rome today and has 33 days to go before coming back to the KY!  I know that you have probably noticed the post yesterday by my younger daughter, Kendall.  The back to school rush is really getting me down; not to mention my decreasing access to the internet at home.  Kendall graciously offered to post the blog for her sister and I was pleased at her first attempt.  I hope that Whytney appreciates her sister learning new technology!  Probably is much easier for her than for me?!

Rome, Italy - a sight to see:

A fortress in Rome, The Castel Sant'Angelo was built as a mausoleum for Emperor Hadrain.  It has since been used for different purposes; a prison, a refuge for the pope, and now a museum.  A tunnel actually connects it to the Vatican.  I guess for a quick escape???

Whytney could visit the Piazza Navona which is one of the favorite squares and a most beautiful piazzas.  There are two famous fountains in this square; Fontana dei Quatro Fiumi and Fontana del Moro.  The square also offers great sidewalk cafes and numerous restaurants.  It is also a popular hangout for local artists - Whytney might even be able to get a caricature.  (I don't think that I spelled that correctly???)

Michelangelo actually designed the Piazza del Campidoglio around the 16th century, located on Capital Hill. The Capitoline Museums are located here in this piazza.  Whytney could find some beautiful sculptures and famous paintings if she is able to visit.  This is also a great vantage point to view the city of Rome.

The Temple of Venus and Roma was built by Emperor Hadrian in around 121 AD.  It can be seen from the Coliseum in Rome Italy.  I am pretty sure that Whytney has been to the Coliseum; I wonder if see has seen this temple?

Finally, Whytney might be interested (and amused) in the House of the Vestal Virgins; home of Rome's only female priests.  This complex contains a courtyard with three ponds.  The six women (Vestal), selected at the age of 10, come from Noble families.  They were expected to serve as priests for 30 years!  Impressive!!!

Whatever Whytney does today; I hope that it is a great day!  33 days and she will be able to be home and seeing the impressive sights of the Bluegrass State.  She will be joining a lot of foreigners as well.  The World Equestrian Games will be in town soon after her arrival.  Who knows, she may run in to some people she met in Europe!

Tomorrow is a sea day and a busy one for her - hope that the guests are ready to get beautiful!  We love you Whytney and cannot wait to see you - get ready to party with the Gott's on September 11th.

Nice time in Nice, France

I heard that it was a great day for Whytney today in Nice, France.  Into the third to last cruise, Whytney made her first port day in Nice.  I believe that she was able to spend some time in Nice today because of some pictures that she has posted on fb.  However, I have only been able to access fb on my phone - been at work all day and no fb time YET!   If she did get to go to Nice today, she quite possibly could have experienced some exciting attractions.

Place Massena is one of Nice's main squares. This plaza is home to Galleries Lafayette and eventually will have a tram system set up for its visitors.  You will find this attractive square at the southern end of  Avenue Jean Medecin, a major artery in the city.

She might spend some time walking along the French Riviera if it is a nice sunny day.  I am sure that she would enjoy this.  Maybe grab some ice cream and take a leisurely stroll.

Better yet, she could bask in Nice's lovely Mediterranean architecture and sculptures. One such sculpures is entitled La TĂȘte au CarrĂ© de Sosno. Located across the road from the Acropolis Convention Centre it is a gigantic sight to behold!

How nice would it be able to take a train from Nice to Barcelona, Marseille, Avignon, Paris, Munich, Milan and other European cities. She could board a train at this magnificant station for any of these romantic destinations.  I am sure she would be all over that if USA were on that list.

Finally, overlooking Nice is The Colline du Chateau (Castle Hill).  She could enjoy a wonderful panoramic view of Nice France and the French Riviera from this perch. Located near the Mediterranean sea between the old town and the Port of Nice, she might be able to view this from the deck of the ship?  There is also an old fort is situated on the hilltop.

Regardless of her experiences in Nice today, one thing that I am sure of is that it was a good day for her.  For a Mom to know that is to be at peace.  I hope and pray that tomorrow in Florence, Italy, she will have the same or better kind of day.

34 more days, 34 more nights, 34 more corny posts...
